Yoga & Cystic Fibrosis

The health benefits of yoga are well documented. It has been known to reduce stress and improve range of motion, strength, and breathing. But it also has been known to help manage certain conditions and diseases. Yoga can help with heart disease and high blood pressure and, as was recently discovered in a Minnesota Children’s Hospital study, Yoga can be beneficial for children with Cystic Fibrosis.  The study, conducted over six weeks, proves yoga can help alleviate stress and breathing problems for children with CF.

Yoga And CF

The research and resources dedicated to CF is growing at a rapid rate. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Therapeutic Development Network conducted an initial survey of children with CF and it revealed a few concerning issues. They were:


Musculoskeletal pain

Sleep problems

Scientists put forth a theory that the exercise that yoga can provide would be able to alleviate or reduce some of those symptoms in kids with CF. A study was conducted in order to test this theory out. The results? Yoga was found to leave the children in the study feeling more relaxed and breathing easier.

Ask your physician or pediatrician about Yoga exercises if there is a child in your life with Cystic Fibrosis. In addition, follow the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutic Development Network, the CFF’s network of clinical research centers that continues to push forward on the development of new, effective CF treatments and therapies.  The Therapeutic Development Network (TDN) was responsible for providing the grant for the Yoga study. The TDN’s continued progress towards bettering the lives of CF patients is worth taking note of and checking regularly!

    Such good words! You can never know what is going on inside of the pelope around you. I lived with chronic sometimes debilitating pain for a couple of years. The most hurtful and frustrating thing is to have some one who loves you or that you love doubt your situation because you are trying to keep up appearances or you're not complaining all of the time. Trust me .no one wants to hear it. Being upbeat and positive in the face of disaster is a gift. Thanks for the reminder SuziQ!
